Lake Taupo Day Out is a family-run boat charter in Taupo, New Zealand, owned and operated by Jamie and Sarah Looner.
Jamie (a New Zealander) and Sarah (originally from the United Kingdom) both came up through the waterborne hospitality industry: Jamie as a class IV Master and Sarah as nurse/stewardess. Their work brought them together aboard a luxury yacht in the Mediterranean, whereupon they gave up the sailing lifestyle to own an accommodation premise in the Coromandel and then a café at Mount Maunganui. After that they planned to do some overland travel, and possibly get back to sea in the future, but sailing intervened more quickly than they planned.
In March 2011 Jamie and Sarah purchased the historic sailing vessel Barbary on Lake Taupo. Barbary underwent a complete refurbishment and is the first and only electric yacht to work commercially in NZ, taking people to the famous Maori Rock Carvings.
When the opportunity arose for Jamie and Sarah to purchase Ranui, a 1945 classic cruiser, in April 2014 they simply couldn’t refuse. She sits beside Barbary at the Taupo Boat Harbour and she too has been revived and refurbished. The classic boat feel remains while some modern features have been introduced to deliver comfort and attention to your experience on board this boat charter in Taupo.
With their rich history, both Barbary and Ranui have helped write the great stories that draw people of all ages to this wonderful playground we call Great Lake Taupo.
